Nike VR_S Covert 2.0 Driver

Upgraded for 2014

By David Theoret

It's that time of year again; the birds are chirping, spring is in the air and all kinds of new golf equipment is showing up at driving ranges. Nike is no different and one of the stars of this year's lineup is the new VR_S Covert 2.0 driver. It's available in a standard model and is showing up in bags of staffers Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Kevin Chappell and Nick Watney.

In this year's model, Nike has made certain enhancements to the club's High Speed Cavity Back technology, which distributes weight to the perimeter and stiffening the rear portion of the club. This delivers more energy to the ball, resulting in greater ball speed, greater distance and control. The Cavity Back can only be seen when you flip the club over; it's covered and hidden by the crown, making the club more aesthetically pleasing as you stand over it.

A second enhancement to the new Covert 2.0 driver is a re-engineered NexCOR face. The NexCOR face creates a larger sweet spot and boost ball speed on mishits by incorporating variable thickness in the face. The face of the club is 15 percent larger in the VR_S Covert 2.0 Tour version and 7 percent larger in the VR_S Covert 2.0 model.

Unlike other adjustable drivers which allows the player ± 1 degree, the VR_S Covert 2.0 driver allows golfers to decrease loft to 8.5 degrees or increase it to 12.5 degrees. The face-angle can also be set in one of three positions: Open. Closed or neutral. It's like having 15 drivers in one! Last but not least, Nike also used modified X3X grooves on the irons, which help to increase spin that helps maintain ball flight.

A new version of the Mitsubishi Rayon Kuro Kage shafts come standard for both models. The Tour version of the VR_S Covert 2.0 uses the Kuro Kage Silver 60 graphite, which features Titanium Nickel fiber in the tip section, creating more stability and lower spin. The non-Tour version VR_S Covert 2.0 utilizes the Kuro Kage Black HBP Graphite 50 shaft, which has a higher balance point, allowing for higher swing speeds without the need to add length to the shaft.

The price point is pretty aggressive too. The VR_S Covert 2.0 driver retails for $299 while the Tour version will set you back $399. These clubs are available now at all online and brick and mortar retailers. About: David Theoret

David Theoret David Theoret has been in the golf and golf travel industry for over 10 years, primarily selling online advertising. For the past seven years, he has also been a golf writer, reviewing golf courses, resorts, destinations, equipment, golf apparel, and training aids - the latter of which never seems to help. David's articles and reviews have been posted on many golf travel and equipment websites.

Growing up in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, it was naturally assumed he would play hockey. Beginning at the age of 3 and continuing into his late 30's, he did just that. However, after one too many pucks to the head, he realized that golf was a lot easier on the body (whoever said hockey players were slow) and took the game up.

After moving to Florida and accepting a position with TravelGolf Media (now part of GolfNow) his love for the game grew exponentially. Most Saturdays you will find him on a course somewhere in Florida or on the practice range reinforcing his bad habits. David plays to a 10 handicap - unless there is money involved in which case it goes considerably higher. He currently resides in Lakeland, FL with his wife Belinda and their two "kids", Madyson and Molly.
