Loudmouth Golf Apparel Review

Loudmouth Golf Apparel Review

By David Theoret

I used to associate Loudmouth Golf with obnoxiousness; Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack comes to mind. Had they been around back when the movie came out, there is little doubt in my mind that he would have been their spokesperson. John Daly's not a bad choice though! Strike One.

My first introduction to the brand was a few years ago. There was a co-worker that would wear his Loudmouth pants every other casual Friday. They were loud and somewhat obnoxious - well suited to his personality. Strike two.

For those of you not familiar with the brand, Loudmouth is a sportswear company based in Sonoma County, California and was originally known for their outrageous pants. The company was established by Scott "Woody" Woodworth in 2000. Woodworth, a graphic designer at the time, created his first design using Warner Brothers cartoon characters. The design was made by a local seamstress and was originally intended as a children's fabric however it quickly caught the eye of various sports personalities who soon began ordering the pants. In 2007, Woodworth began creating his own fabric designs and Loudmouth was on its way in the golf apparel industry.

Loudmouth creations are not only for the golf course. At the Winter Olympics in 2010, the Norwegian curling team played their matches wearing Loudmouth's "Dixie-A" pants with red, white, and blue diamonds. The team also gave a pair to King Harald V of Norway. A Facebook fan page was created specifically for Norway's pants and drew more than 500,000 fans during the Olympics. Loudmouth's web traffic increased tenfold and sales tripled during this period.

Also, many celebrities have been seen clad in Loudmouth apparel including Alice Cooper, Bill Murray, Will Ferrell, Penny Marshall, Dennis Rodman, and Kyle Busch. Loudmouth's garments have also made TV appearances on such hit TV shows as HBO's Dexter, Disney's Austin & Ally, Saturday Night Live, One Tree Hill and The Tonight Show - back when Jay Leno was the host.

When I started reviewing golf apparel, I thought that a review of different styles would not be complete without including Loudmouth. They were kind enough to send me a pair of Merlot and Chardonnay shorts - not officially Florida State shorts but close enough that you are considered an obsessed fan when wearing them in public. My wife received a Betsy Ross skort, which has become the rage of the club; oddly enough more and more Loudmouth apparel is being seen at our golf course every day.

The shorts and skorts are 97% cotton and 3% spandex and fit true-to-size. I opted for the Easy Fit waistband and the standard 11" inseam; my wife went with the standard outseam length on her skort which is 17". All garments can be "made to order" so the right fit is never an issue. The yellow embroidered LM logo on the back adds a classy touch to each piece. They even have a few NCAA and a couple of NFL team logos available.

There is a lot of attention paid to detail in putting these garments together. The fabric used for the pockets is covered with the Loudmouth logo and the stitching on the pockets is slightly raised. The fly is a heavy duty zipper.

Loudmouth is definitely not the IBM of golf wear; it's for golfers who want to be noticed. It's also not a bad idea to have a game that can back it up - but I wear them anyway.

My feelings about Loudmouth Golf and their product offerings have definitely changed since my introduction to them. The bottom line is that these clothes are just plain fun to wear - as long as you don't take yourself too seriously. Just have a good time, smile a little and laugh a lot. Like my friends do when critiquing my golf game.

David Theoret David Theoret has been in the golf and golf travel industry for over 10 years, primarily selling online advertising. For the past seven years, he has also been a golf writer, reviewing golf courses, resorts, destinations, equipment, golf apparel, and training aids - the latter of which never seems to help. David's articles and reviews have been posted on many golf travel and equipment websites.

Growing up in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, it was naturally assumed he would play hockey. Beginning at the age of 3 and continuing into his late 30's, he did just that. However, after one too many pucks to the head, he realized that golf was a lot easier on the body (whoever said hockey players were slow) and took the game up.

After moving to Florida and accepting a position with TravelGolf Media (now part of GolfNow) his love for the game grew exponentially. Most Saturdays you will find him on a course somewhere in Florida or on the practice range reinforcing his bad habits. David plays to a 10 handicap - unless there is money involved in which case it goes considerably higher. He currently resides in Lakeland, FL with his wife Belinda and their two "kids", Madyson and Molly.
