Bobby Jones Golf Apparel

Still Looking Good After 25 Years

By David Theoret

Just the mention of the name Bobby Jones conjures up images of gentlemanly qualities and perfection. The same can be said for the apparel company that bears his name.

In 2014, Bobby Jones Apparel celebrated its 25th anniversary. What has helped the company survive is a combination of character, integrity, respect, consistency and an unwavering pursuit of excellence. And, as part of their 25th anniversary celebration, Bobby Jones is creating products that capitalize on technology and deliver on the promise of enduring style.

It seems like just yesterday the word polyester made the fabric world cringe; now, we embrace it. Furthermore, the research and development going on around the world is all about creating fabrics that can do amazing things and feel amazing too. The new Bobby Jones garments are spill resistant, moisture wicking and odor proof. They dry fast and are easy to care for. Shorts feature an expandable comfort waistband and are not baggy in the least.

In the past, the Bobby Jones Apparel line seemed to be geared towards an older crowd, as is the case with many of the apparel companies that cater to a more upscale market. That is now changing and Bobby Jones constantly updates their styles in an effort to appeal to golfers of all ages. By offering a more athletic fit, the company is showing a hipper, younger side; an aspect not always followed by similar companies.

My wife and I were sent several items from Bobby Jones for review, including women's wear from the fall 2014 Martha's Vineyard Clover Collection.

Ombre Shorts: The entire men's wear collection just pops with brilliant colors of purple and orange and these shorts are no exception. The Ombre Plaid shorts have quickly become one of my favorite pair of shorts. They are made from cotton with just a hint of stretch and feature gripper tape on the waistband to keep everything where it should be. The Ombre Plaid shorts are infused with color and look great paired with a plum colored or orange polo.

120s/2 Supreme Cotton Polo. The Supreme Cotton polo is made in Peru from 120s 2-ply yarns. It has a soft silky finish and brilliant luster; it breathes well and washes beautifully. If you're partial to cotton, you're going to love this polo which is comfortable and easy to care for. The Supreme Polo also sports the infamous Bobby Jones golfer logo laser engraved on the garment. In fact, it's a Bobby Jones Signature item and comes in 12 different colors.

Also received was a Leaderboard ¼ Zip Pullover; another Bobby Jones Signature item. This 100% Peruvian Pima cotton garment uses a special finish to achieve it rich, vibrant color and brilliant luster. The Leaderboard ¼ Zip Pullover offers both superb comfort and long-lasting wear and is the perfect layering piece when the temperatures start to drop. The Leaderboard ¼ Zip Pullover features a rib collar that is striped on the inside, as well as ribbed side and underarm sleeve panels. The Bobby Jones player logo is engraved on the zipper pull and is available in 8 brilliant colors.

On the women's side, my wife received the Tangled Ropes Tech Top which adds a sophisticated nautical twist to a golf top. The Tangled Rope Printed Tech Top is a printed Meryl/Lycra jersey with a Princess seam for shaping. It features the new Bobby Jones' signature Clover zipper pull, a mock neck with metallion zipper closure and a contrast inside neck. This is definitely a top women can wear both on and off the course and has a very classy look. The Tangled Ropes Tech Top is available in either a terracotta or pearl white base color.

She also received a pair of Tangled Rope shorts and a pair of cotton stretch shorts. Both are a blend of 97% cotton and 3% Spandex. The sateen weave process used by Bobby Jones places as many threads on the surface as possible, making it extremely soft and lustrous. It gives their garments a dressier look. The Tangled Rope Shorts feature an 11" inseam, front quarter top pockets with pick stitching detail, 2 back welt pockets, side slits. The Bobby Jones Clover insignia is embroidered above the right back pocket.

The Tangled Rope Skort is made of the same blend and sateen look as the shorts. They feature a gentle A-line shape with side zip closure as well as front quarter top pockets, 2 back welt pockets and side slits. It also sports the Bobby Jones' Clover insignia embroidered above wearer's right back pocket.

No matter what your choice of apparel is from the Bobby Jones collection, odds are you will be extremely pleased. Not only is the selection great - and quite colorful - the company really stands behind their products. Their goal is to have happy customers which makes for repeat customers and in this business brand loyalty is everything.

David Theoret David Theoret has been in the golf and golf travel industry for over 10 years, primarily selling online advertising. For the past seven years, he has also been a golf writer, reviewing golf courses, resorts, destinations, equipment, golf apparel, and training aids - the latter of which never seems to help. David's articles and reviews have been posted on many golf travel and equipment websites.

Growing up in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, it was naturally assumed he would play hockey. Beginning at the age of 3 and continuing into his late 30's, he did just that. However, after one too many pucks to the head, he realized that golf was a lot easier on the body (whoever said hockey players were slow) and took the game up.

After moving to Florida and accepting a position with TravelGolf Media (now part of GolfNow) his love for the game grew exponentially. Most Saturdays you will find him on a course somewhere in Florida or on the practice range reinforcing his bad habits. David plays to a 10 handicap - unless there is money involved in which case it goes considerably higher. He currently resides in Lakeland, FL with his wife Belinda and their two "kids", Madyson and Molly.
