True Temper Dynamic Golf Mid Shafts
Top Performance Shafts
By David Theoret
True Temper Golf was originally known as the American Fork & Hoe company. But with the golf swing being more graceful than the stab-and-grab motion of garden tools, the name was changed to True Temper in 1949. The Dynamic steel shaft was introduced in 1942 and remained that way until 1980 when it became Dynamic Gold. For the past 44 years, more professional and amateur golf tournaments have been won with Dynamic Gold shafts than any other shaft on the market.
Scott Hennessy has been the President and CEO of True Temper since 1998. He says that "the steel shaft has remained the market leader for all these years because of its consistency." The company also owns prominent graphite shaft companies Grafalloy, Project X and most recently became the owner of Aerotech, maker of SteelFiber shafts. True Temper produces 80,000 to 100,000 shafts a day in a variety of weights, flexes, and ball flights.
Recently, True Temper launched an iteration of its popular Dynamic Gold shaft, The Dynamic Gold Mid was built specifically for the golf clubs of today and blends seamlessly with the latest golf ball and equipment technologies. True Temper uses a unique shaft geometry that creates a stiffer mid-section along with an active tip section to help increase launch angle and increase spin compared to other Dynamic Gold shafts True Temper has always been known for making some of the heaviest shafts on the market; many of them weigh around 130g. These shafts are available in three weight classes: light (100g), mid (115g), and tour (130g), and in regular, stiff, and extra stiff flexes.
Among the many aspects of the golf shot that are greatly affected by the shaft are tempo, trajectory, and spin. Tempo greatly affects how well - or poorly - you hit a golf shot. It affects how the shaft loads and unloads for each shot and plays a big part in which shaft is best for you. The Dynamic Gold Mid shafts are best suited for a player with a moderate tempo. If you tend to have a fast backswing followed by a fast downswing these probably aren't the right shafts for you.
I recently picked up a set of Takomo 201 iron heads and installed the new Dynamic Gold Mid shafts on them. After hitting about 10 shots, I realized that everything True Temper claimed about the shaft was indeed correct. The ball jettisoned off the clubface, flew a little higher and further than I'm used to, and reacted nicely on the green. I'm convinced that if I stay with this setup long enough I will also see improvements in ball shaping and workability. They could easily find their way into my bag on a more permanent basis!
The biggest change with the new True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid iron shaft is the stiffer midsection. The active tip increases the ability to feel the clubhead without losing clubhead speed. I didn't see or feel it at first, but after hitting about 20 shots on the range, I noticed a slightly higher ball flight and a little more distance.
The bottom line is that with the new Dynamic Gold Mid Shafts, you'll get medium spin and medium trajectory. The Dynamic Gold Mid is a great option for golfers with a moderate tempo who want extra launch and a bit more control from their iron shots. Only consider these shafts if you want a shaft that's lighter, faster, and game-changing and can help you to take your game to the next level. You can visit their website at www.truetempershafts.com.

David Theoret has been in the golf and golf travel industry for over 10 years, primarily selling online advertising. For the past seven years, he has also been a golf writer, reviewing golf courses, resorts, destinations, equipment, golf apparel, and training aids - the latter of which never seems to help. David's articles and reviews have been posted on many golf travel and equipment websites.
Growing up in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, it was naturally assumed he would play hockey. Beginning at the age of 3 and continuing into his late 30's, he did just that. However, after one too many pucks to the head, he realized that golf was a lot easier on the body (whoever said hockey players were slow) and took the game up.
After moving to Florida and accepting a position with TravelGolf Media (now part of GolfNow) his love for the game grew exponentially. Most Saturdays you will find him on a course somewhere in Florida or on the practice range reinforcing his bad habits. David plays to a 10 handicap - unless there is money involved in which case it goes considerably higher. He currently resides in Lakeland, FL with his wife Belinda and their two "kids", Madyson and Molly.
