Tiger Woods 2010
Reaction to Tiger's breakof silence
By Chuck Garbedian
Now let me get this straight, after months of hearing nothing we're now going to get a press conference filled with...nothing?
Tiger Woods is going to speak this Friday from the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse, literally right down the street from the PGA TOUR headquarters. The TPC Sawgrass is in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and is more than three hours away from Tiger Woods's home base of Orlando, Florida.
So what has Tiger got to say so urgently that he needs to travel three hours from his home, upstage the PGA TOUR on two different fronts, and throw it in the face of one of his former sponsors, Accenture? I would imagine nothing.
Really, what is he going to say? I'm sorry? That's a given, but for what? His "transgressions"? Sure. Sorry for the harm he caused his wife, his family, his name, his sponsors, his friends, the TOUR, their sponsors? Sure, but why now and why there?
What lightning bolt has struck Tiger so urgently that he needs to address a "small group of friends, colleagues and close associates", three wire services (AP, Bloomberg, Reuters) and one camera that will feed the satellite beast on a Friday morning in February in North East Florida?
The general consensus was that at some point Tiger would have to come clean, meet the media, apologize in person and show true contrition. If this is just a show, it is a poorly orchestrated one.
First off, it goes by no one that the day the non-press-conference is announced is during the first round of the Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana, Arizona.
A wild Wednesday was in store, including NCAA type brackets with match play matches taking place and wild scoring swings from all over the desert floor. Accenture was the first sponsor to drop Tiger and if there is one thing that Tiger never does, it's forgets. It was a calculated move to have the non-press-conference announced when it was and hold it when it's going to be. Yeah, you're Accenture, but I'm Tiger Woods and like it or not I still move the needle and I'm about to move on over you.
Second, the PGA TOUR is clearly in on this. Commissioner Tim Finchem was quoted by the Associated Press as saying, "We were asked to make the facility available and to help with the logistics. That's what we're doing." Make no mistake, these two need each other. There is a television deal coming up and the TOUR, Finchem and the sponsors need to have a roaring Tiger to secure the money they are eyeing for short and long term security.
Third, who are the "small group of friends, colleagues and close associates" that will be on hand? Would you want to be part of that group? You didn't help this guy when he was running wild and now you're there for him? Great. The only two people I'm looking for are Elin and Stevie Williams. If Elin is there, and it will say a lot if she is there, then will there or won't there be golf? If Stevie is there, it's game on with the Tavistock Cup (March 22-23) as a tune-up to the Arnold Palmer Invitational (March 25-28) and then off to Augusta.
Speaking of which, Augusta would be the perfect place for Tiger to lay low. It's an ultra private club where Woods could work on his game, not be bothered by the membership, the media or other players and it would give him a head start on his prep for the 2010 Masters.
I think the following happens. Tiger says he's sorry, he's human, he makes mistakes, the family is working through this, please respect our privacy at this time, I'm playing in Arnold's Tournament and then the Masters.
That would be more than nothing.
