The Dunes at Maui Lani
The Best Value on Maui
By Don Kriefall
The Dunes at Maui-Lani are carved out of the natural rolling sand dunes and hills native to the Maui central valley. The topography lends to deep valleys and steep sloping hills. Built in 1999, course architect Robin Nelson incorporated most of the natural landscape and blended it into quite the challenging golf course. Called the "British Open course on Maui", it really has clever hole designs that really do remind you of the birthplace of golf. With rates at just $112.00, the Dunes at Maui-Lani is one of the best values in Hawaii. Number 15 is the signature hole, from the black tees a 448 yard par 4 that really plays like a par 5. After a tee shot over a deep valley your uphill approach is a blind shot to a green protected by a treacherous ravine that many golfers find the hard way. So unless you nail your drive, you likely will need to lay up.

Local Knowledge
The Dune at Maui-Lani is a challenging golf course with many blind shots and hidden trouble. A "caddie journal" is an absolute necessity. The tips and recommendations offered by your "caddie journal" will help make your round more enjoyable and lower your score. Number 10, a 478 yard par 5 plays uphill, so it plays longer than the yardage. On your approach, there is rough all the way up to the elevated green. The rough will hold approach shots that are short, but the snarly Bermuda grass will hamper your swing. Number 4, a 509 par 5 begins with a blind tee shot between bunkers and over a steep hill. Your approach shot better not be short, as the front of the elevated green slopes sharply down to the fairway and shots hitting the front edge of the green likely will roll back, well into the fairway. Been there, done that.
Dining
Cafe O'Lei offers fine dining (the blackened Mahi-Mahi is awesome) or just stop in after your round for one of their specialities, a Mac-Nut crusted chicken sandwich or a crab club.
Overview
The layout of the Dunes at Maui-Lani really makes for a fun round. Whether you are a scratch or a 15 handicap, you will thoroughly enjoy your golfing experience. This course would be a bargain at twice the price!
