TimberStone Sets the Bar in the U.P.
One of Only 24 5-star Properties According to Golf Digest
By Brian Weis
My playing partner laughed after the first nine. He commented, "you didn't shoot any birdies yet, but you shot a herd a deer."
While I was struggling on the course, I was able to capture a few close up deer shots with my camera. Wildlife buffs take note, in an early morning round I counted no less than two dozen deer.
All jokes aside, Jerry Matthews built a master piece that slowly climbs Pine Mountain then concludes with stunning downhill drops especially the par-4 9th, par-3 17th and par-5 18th. The 6,937-yard, par-72 layout requires accurate straight shots off the tee to avoid dense Michigan forest and pines.
Notable Holes
#9 - Measures 471 yards from the tips, 448 yards from boulder tees, a 300 yard drive is feasible for anyone who gets a hold of it thanks to a huge elevation drop from tee to green. Joe Rizzo, Director of Golf, loves the 9th not only for the scenry but seems to always play the hole well. To get your par, keep the ball in play and out of the trees.
#17 - One of most jaw dropping par-3's in the Midwest. Shape of green mirrors Sagola lake that can be seen in distance. A well struck mid iron will result in a 15 second hang time. Note, the hole plays 2 clubs less.
#18 - Three fairway tiers that tumble to a sunken putting surface. 625 yards from the tips takes two mighty shots to find the green. Best way to make a birdie, stick it close and one-putt.
No trip is complete without visiting the patio grill and ordering up a famous double cheeseburger hot off the grill. Special note if you arrive in the spring or fall you may see workers huddled next the fire that burns between 9 and 18

All of his life, Brian has been around the game of golf. As a youngster, Brian competed at all levels in junior and high school golf. Brian had a zero chance for a college golf scholarship, so he worked on the grounds crew at West Bend Country Club to pay for his University of Wisconsin education. In his adult years, his passion for the game collided with his entrepreneurial spirit and in 2004 launched GolfWisconsin.com. In 2007, the idea for a network of local golf directory sites formed and GolfTrips.com was born. Today, the network consists of a site in all 50 states supported by national sites like GolfTrips.com, GolfGuide.com and GolfPackages.com. It is an understatement to say, Brian is passionate about promoting golf and golf travel on a local, regional, national and international level.
On the golf course, Brian is known as a fierce weekend warrior that fluctuates between a 5-9 handicap. With a soft fade, known as "The Weis Slice", and booming 300+ drives, he can blast it out of bounds with the best of them.
