Cape Fear National
Signature Holes
By Jamie Crisafulli
Cape Fear National lies in the Coastal Plains of Southeastern North Carolina, just south of Historic Downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. At the 18-hole Championship golf course masterpiece, golf is exceptional and unmatched in the region. Named a "must-play" Course by GolfWeek Magazine, Cape Fear National offers the best in play on a course that is described as "challenging, yet forgiving and a fantastic experience."
With 18 impressive holes of golf, Cape Fear National's signature holes showcase the best the Championship course has to offer. Learn the ins-and-outs of each of these favored holes!
Hole #3 Par 4
With a handicap at 3, Hole #3 at Cape Fear National is definitely one of the most difficult of the 18. This particular hole is 442 yards and begins with a water shot and bunkers that hug the right side. On this hole, the safest play is on the right half of the fairway although two fairway bunkers strategically placed down the right side prevent a complete bailout to the right. The tee shot on this signature hole is particularly intimidating and will leave you questioning the best play.
Insider Tip: Aim for the leaning tree in the distance. Once you are in play, make sure you have enough club to carry the bunker guarding the right front side of the green.
Hole #9 Par 3
Hole #9 exemplifies true natural Carolina beauty that complements each of Cape Fear National's 18 holes. As you find yourself at the halfway point of this Championship course, Hole #9 is distinctive in the way that 205 yards of this par 3 play over a unique Cypress creek. With a wide green that contours to the left and right offering generous depth, the secret to this hole is the location of the pin; if located on the right this hole is a cinch, but if located on the left, difficulty grows forcing you to the creek side of the green.
Insider Tip: If the pin is tucked on the left side, aim for the left middle of the back bunker and your shot will take the right to left slope towards the pin.
Hole #13 Par 4
Appropriately nicknamed "the postcard hole," Hole #13 on Cape Fear National culminates with first-class views and just undeniably fun golf! The elevated tees on this hole offer a clear and full view to plan the perfect strategy on this handicap 2. Standing at 427 yards, Hole #13 features water on the left and a bunker to the right. Consider distance control on this downhill tee shot to provide optimum yardage for approach and try to avoid the bunker that cuts through the fairway. The green complex on Hole #13 is very large and slightly crowned.
Insider Tip: Take as much club as possible off the tee without driving your tee shot into the bunker cut-through. The edge of the cut-through is approximately 110 yards from the green and wind is a factor on this elevated tee surface.
