The Squeeze Movie Review
Golf Flick: A Cautionary Tale
By John Ehle
Producer/Director Terry Jastrow is well-traveled and revered in the world of sports having filmed numerous major tournaments, the Olympic Games, has won 7 Emmy Awards from 24 nominations and worked with Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Butch Harmon and others on a variety of instructional videos and golf-related projects. His 30 year career has been very successful.
Mr. Jastrow's latest project."The Squeeze" , is the true story of an acquaintance of Jastrow's who finds himself in the clutches of a confidence man. This young golfer can play but is naïve in the way the golf world works for unsavory characters.
What seems to be easy money ("marks" are abundant) leads to a trip to Las Vegas and a million dollar game which has life or death stakes in a complicated world which our young protagonist starts to understand only after he has made several serious mistakes as the people he encounters have less than altruistic motivations.
The characters are aptly drawn and directed and the story seems to be headed toward a nasty but inevitable conclusion when an intervention redirects the action toward a conclusion with a life lesson attached.
Jastrow nudges the plot toward a climax which evokes endings not dissimilar from "The Sting" and "The Lady or the Tiger". The film is as artfully filmed as it is cleverly staged. This unusually engaging movie is worth a look whether you golf or not.
