Best Spa and Golf Combinations

By Patrick McCabe

Perhaps unbeknownst to many avid golfers, some of the world's best golf destinations are also home to a few of the finest spas.

What better way to revitalize and reward your body after a round than by enjoying a massage or body wrap? These seven resorts will give individuals, couples and groups the optimal combination of both amenities.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa
Poipu Bay Golf Course

www.poipubaygolf.com"Lokahi" is Hawaiian for unity, harmony or balance, and it's easy to discover on the island of Kauai. Anara Spa at the Grand Hyatt Kauai contains 45,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor spaces to leave guests feeling restored. A can't-miss experience is to receive a massage in one of the open-air huts outside. Surrounded by tropical flowers and the sounds of the nearby Pacific, you'll feel a connection with nature that's hard to find on the mainland.

The accompanying golf property at the Grand Hyatt Kauai is Poipu Bay Golf Course. The celebrated course hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf for 12 years and recently underwent a renovation to become more eco-friendly. Golfers will marvel at the playing through stretches of holes with 150-foot seaside cliffs to one side and lush mountains on the other.

The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel
The Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course

Located in the stunning Canadian Rockies, the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel rises like a castle above the thick forestry of Banff National Park. In the summertime, guests flock to the golf course to play the legendary Stanley Thompson design and experience famous views of the towering mountains surrounding the area. Each winter the resort turns into a world-class ski destination.

One element that does not change from season to season is
Willow Stream Spa. It's been named a Top-5 resort spa in Canada for its creative treatment ingredients and full body packages. Try a rose pedal bath or mountain lavender facial treatment to soothe your spirit.

PGA National Resort & Spa
The Champion Course

Home to The Champion Course, which annually hosts the PGA TOUR's Honda Classic, PGA National Resort & Spa is the perfect place to escape for a golf getaway this winter. Last year, the Champion Course underwent an extensive renovation under the guidance of the Golden Bear himself, Jack Nicklaus. Most notably, Nicklaus moved the green on the 14th hole - which leads into the feared Bear Trap - 17 yards to the right, bringing water into play on the approach. A strong hole became stronger. The Bear Trap now has an even bigger bite!

Inside, you'll find the The Spa at PGA National - an oasis of Palm Beach Gardens tranquility. The Spa features a collection of mineral pools filled with minerals from the Dead Sea and the Salies de Bearn in France. Combine trying to tame the Bear Trap with the "Waters of the World Spa Package." It's the best way to experience the resort's two most luxurious amenities.

Cobble Beach Resort
Cobble Beach Golf Links

North of the border you'll find romance, relaxation and waterfront golf at Cobble Beach, located two hours north of Toronto. With an enviable setting on the Georgian Bay of Lake Huron, the stunning backdrop offers guests all the inspiration they need no matter the season. As the Doug Carrick-designed golf course goes into hibernation for the season, Cobble Beach's slew of winter activities gets fired up.

The Spa at Cobble Beach is proof positive that big things come in small packages. Tucked beneath the clubhouse and boutique inn, it offers a wide variety of treatments for him, her and couples. Massages range from traditional relaxation to hot stone and aromatherapy. There are a variety of facials and wraps on the menu, as well as hand and foot therapies. After a long day of activity, it's the perfect way to recover.

The American Club
Whistling Straights

A resort that is home to four of the country's top courses is certainly considered a destination and that's exactly what you'll find in Destination Kohler, Wisconsin. The cream of the crop is Whistling Straits - Pete Dye's ode to the rawness of Irish golf courses and host of next year's PGA Championship. Its two courses are true bucket list material and worthy of a trip from any part of the country if you're serious about golf.

The American Club is the Midwest's only AAA Five Diamond Resort and home to the contemporary Kohler Waters Spa. Hydrotherapy treatments and acoustic bathing services justify the name of the spa. Small plates of sorbet and chocolate are also at your disposal to nibble on. For the ideal combination of golf and spa, try a customizable package from travel agency Premier Golf. The PGA of America's preferred Ryder Cup partner is also an expert in developing these types of luxury golf itineraries.

Little Creek Casino Resort
Salish Cliffs Golf Club

www.salish-cliffs.com/
Opened in 2010, Salish Cliffs Golf Club at Little Creek Casino Resort already has a trophy case full of awards and accolades. The Gene Bates design is one of the most playable and scenic courses in the Pacific Northwest, with perfectly manicured greens and wide fairways. Changes in elevation also allow for panoramic views of the Kamilche Valley, in the undisturbed Puget Sound region.

The resort prides itself on hosting Vegas-style gaming and attracting premier entertainment talent. But for those looking for a little serenity, the Seven Inlets Spa is a quiet retreat within the exhilarating resort. Guests love the dedicated Meditation Room and Eucalyptus Steam Room. Both offer the chance to recharge; mentally and physically.

Beau Rivage Resort & Casino
Fallen Oak Golf Club

www.fallenoak.com
With spa package names like "Day of Beauty" and "All About You", southern hospitality is on full display at Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Mississippi. As if de-stressing wasn't easy enough on the Gulf coast, spa guests can select treatments at a spacious solarium or plunge pool to ease their spirit.

You'll need to feel your best if you want to tackle a round of golf. Exclusivity is the name of the game at Fallen Oak Golf Club - which is only available for guests of the resort. The Tom Fazio design is a challenge, but few can resist the opportunity to play through one of the country's most acclaimed courses.
