Callaway Hybrid GPS/Rangefinder Review

The Best of Both Worlds

By David Theoret

OK, so you're trying to decide between a laser range finder or a GPS system to help you with your golf game. Some of your buddies are whispering in your ear that a GPS is the best way to go while others swear by the precision of a laser rangefinder. What to do, what to do? Well, now you don't need to choose, because the new Callaway Micro Laser Rangefinder delivers the best of both worlds. Yes, the benefits of both laser and prism technology within one ultra-compact, lightweight device.

As a rangefinder, this new unit from Callaway has great accuracy and is very easy to use. For golf courses that have flagsticks with built-in reflectors, Prism Mode allows you to quickly zero in on the distance to the pin with minimal effort and a high degree of accuracy. When playing a course without flagstick reflectors, simply place the unit in P.A.T (Pin Acquisition Technology) mode and lock onto the flagstick quickly and accurately from up to 300 yards away! And, with Birdie Technology, you'll know you have the pin locked in when you hear a chirp.

As a GPS unit, the Callaway Micro Laser Rangefinder delivers many of the features you'd expect to find in a high priced unit. The GPS distances to the front, center and back of the green are displayed on an easy-to-read LCD screen located just below the laser scope on back of the device.

The unit comes preloaded with over 30,000 courses from around the world. Better yet, there is never anything to download or any subscription fee. Course map updates or additions are done on demand through a simple online process. The auto-hole advancement feature will never leave you guessing where you are and provides bot only accurate distances to the front, center and back of the green, but also precise layup and carry distances to hazards and doglegs. While in laser mode, take advantage of 6x magnification with a range of 5-1,000 yards. The scan mode allows you to survey the landscape and acquire distances to multiple targets.

The Callaway Micro Hybrid GPS Laser Rangefinder uses two different batteries. The Laser Rangefinder module only uses the CR2 3V (replaceable) battery. The GPS module only uses the internal lithium ion rechargeable (non-replaceable) battery. The rechargeable lithium battery can last up to 2 full rounds on a single charge. And, to conserve battery life, the device has an auto shutoff feature which automatically powers off when idle for more than 5 seconds. In the event you run out of juice on the GPS side, you'll still have a full functioning laser rangefinder - provided you have a fresh battery!

The Callaway Micro Hybrid GPS Laser Rangefinder is currently available in a convenient Power Pack, which includes the unit and carrying case with carabiner clip, (2) CR2-3V lithium batteries, a Callaway divot repair tool with magnetic ball marker. Cleaning cloth and a sleeve of Callaway Chrome Soft golf balls. The Micro Hybrid GPS Laser Rangefinder is both water and fog proof and comes with a one-year warranty. The price on the www.callawaydmd.com website has been reduced to $349.00.

So, if you're trying to get home in two, trying to find out what's on the other side of those trees down the right side or just looking to hit a layup shot to the middle of the dogleg, the Callaway Micro Hybrid GPS Laser Rangefinder delivers as much information as you will ever need in two different formats. Go ahead and hit your next shot with confidence.

About: David Theoret

David Theoret David Theoret has been in the golf and golf travel industry for over 10 years, primarily selling online advertising. For the past seven years, he has also been a golf writer, reviewing golf courses, resorts, destinations, equipment, golf apparel, and training aids - the latter of which never seems to help. David's articles and reviews have been posted on many golf travel and equipment websites.

Growing up in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, it was naturally assumed he would play hockey. Beginning at the age of 3 and continuing into his late 30's, he did just that. However, after one too many pucks to the head, he realized that golf was a lot easier on the body (whoever said hockey players were slow) and took the game up.

After moving to Florida and accepting a position with TravelGolf Media (now part of GolfNow) his love for the game grew exponentially. Most Saturdays you will find him on a course somewhere in Florida or on the practice range reinforcing his bad habits. David plays to a 10 handicap - unless there is money involved in which case it goes considerably higher. He currently resides in Lakeland, FL with his wife Belinda and their two "kids", Madyson and Molly.
