The Top Three Golf Tournaments To Visit In The UK In 2017
By Marcus Davies
If you are planning a trip to the UK this year, you might want to do so around some of the leading golf tournaments that take place across the Atlantic. Today, we're taking a look at the top three events this year:
2017 BMW PGA Championship, Wentworth
The BMW PGA Championship is the flagship event on the PGA Tour and takes place at Wentworth Club in Surrey, so it is not too far away from London if you want to stay in the capital during your trip. The events always feature a strong field as the likes of the 2014 champion Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson travel across from the USA to take part each year.
Wentworth Club is the home of the European Tour and there are four golf courses at the venue. The PGA Championship is played on the west course, which is a par 72 and consists of 7,308 yards. One of the most interesting holes to look out for is the second, which is just 154 yards and tests the best players' short game.
2017 Open Championship - Royal Birkdale, Southport
The Open Championship is one of the most iconic sporting events anywhere in the world. It is the oldest of the four Majors and the one that every golfer wants to win. This tournament is played at a links course in the UK and this year it is taking place at Royal Birkdale, which is in Southport, a close drive away from Liverpool.
This represents a fantastic opportunity for you to visit the city of Liverpool, which is the home of the Beatles and two famous football clubs in Liverpool and Everton. Tickets are available for individual days of the Major or you can buy a pass for the duration which includes the practice days in advance.
World number one Dustin Johnson tops the betting at +700 to win the Claret Jug this year, which bettors may wish to maximise with welcome bonuses from various bookmakers; Bet365 offers include a £200 matched bet, for example.
2017 British Masters - Close House, Newcastle
The 2017 British Masters is a European Tour event which takes place at the back end of the season and will be hosted this year by Lee Westwood at Close House up in Newcastle. The event was first held in 1946 and some of the great names in the sport have been successful in this competition.
A trip to Close House would allow you to visit the northern city of Newcastle, which includes St James' Park, home to Newcastle Football Club, who have just been promoted back into the Premier League. It is a fantastic friendly city which is full of history. The weather may not be great at the back end of the year, though, so do wrap up warm.
For more details about events which are taking place on the European Tour, take a look on their website for a full list of tournaments on the schedule.
