Golf Course Overview: High Cliff Golf Course

Insights From An Insider With Jeff Luniak, General Manager

By Brian Weis

Local and traveling golfers love to research courses before playing them, whether it is to gain some local knowledge or to set an expectation before their upcoming round. Below is an interview with COREY FELLER who shares some valuable insight about the property, its most talked about holes and the signature dish/drink to consume at the 19th hole.

How Does Your Course Differ From The Others In The Area?
The natural beauty, abundant wildlife and meandering holes through High Cliff State Park offer our customers an atmosphere unlike any other in the Fox River Valley. When playing a round at High Cliff you will encounter animals like turkeys, deer, rabbits, geese, numerous other bird species, foxes and other animals. The front nine winds through the wooded cliff of High Cliff State Park and overlooks beautiful Lake Winnebago and offers a golfing experience like no other. We also only have two holes that run side by side. Come by car come by boat we will be glad to pick you up or bring the camper we have plenty of parking. You will always get great service and great conditions when visiting High Cliff. We look forward to serving you.

For someone who has not played the course in awhile, has there been any new changes/renovations to the course or property?
There are many great changes that have come to the course over the last few years. With an new irrigation system you will notice upgraded playing conditions and healthier turf. We are also adding more tee boxes yearly as we are looking to become a course for "all players" We have also added cart paths and expanded drainage on the back nine and some holes on the front nine almost guaranteeing we will never be closed or not run carts in wet conditions. Our cart paths are also built closer to the fairways so the walk is shorter during cart path only conditions. In 2018 we will be offering a new fleet of Yamaha EFI Quietech golf cars. We are always improving by listening to our customers.

What is your course's answer to Amen Corner? (Describe your best/hardest 3 back/back/back holes)
Holes 6, 7 and 8 is High Cliff Golf Courses answer to amen corner. Hole #6 is a challenging hole running along the Niagara Escarpment with a large pond on the right that runs the length of the hole. This requires an accurate drive and a precise second shot to a difficult green. This is a beautiful hole that will go down as one of the most beautiful you have ever played. #7 is a decent length par 3 that overlooks Lake Winnebago. If you play this during twilight you will witness some of the most beautiful sunsets you have ever seen. This hole requires a long iron over a pond with a large bunker to the right. Don't go long because you will have an almost impossible up and down. #8 is a difficult par 5 that doglegs to the left at the 150 yard marker. a straight drive is required because of the woods and pond to the right. The second shot is a layup to about 100-150 yards between the woods. Do not layup too far because the creek can come into play. The third shot is and uphill shot to an elevated green that slopes back to front and can be difficult to putt. You will really enjoy our version of Amen Corner and we hope you come to try it soon!

What is your course's claim to fame, or is there a little known fact that golfers should know about the property?
