Golf Course Overview: Delbrook Golf Club

Local and traveling golfers love to research courses before playing them, whether it is to gain some local knowledge or to set an expectation before their upcoming round. Below is an interview with Dan Piecha who shares some valuable insight about the property, its most talked about holes and the signature dish/drink to consume at the 19th hole.


How Does Your Course Differ From The Others In The Area?
Delbrook is the only municipally owned course in Walworth County. With 27 holes we change our course rotation on a weekly basis. Two of our 9's are combined for 18 hole play and the other course or "off 9" is used for 9 hole play or walk on play. Pace of play is seldom an issue at Delbrook and if we do have a slower group playing 18 we always have the option of turning them to the "off 9". Our regulars think a 4:15 round on a weekend morning is a long round.

For someone who has not played the course in awhile, has there been any new changes/renovations to the course or property?
We still get visitors who haven't played the course since it was only 18 holes. The change to 27 holes took place in 2001. In 2018 we completed renovations on our bunkers and have plans to pave our cart paths in the fall of 2019. We also have a number of other renovations in the planning stgaes that will take place in the next few years.

What is your course's answer to Amen Corner? (Describe your best/hardest 3 back/back/back holes)
It's not a three hole stretch but on our North Course we have 4 holes that are out by interstate 43. After playing the second hole you cross over a bridge to the third a short 311 par 4. You can try for the green but hitting over the 400 year old oak tree on the left or play out to the right of it. The fourth is a 362 yard par four. You can try to cut off some yardage by taking it over the trees and penalty area on the right. If you play to the left be careful not to hit it into the penalty are on that side. The fifth is a 204 yard par 3, you just need to avoid O.B. on the left and penalty area on the right. The sixth is a 427 yard par 4. Again avoid O.B. on the left and don't get behind another old oak tree on the right side. On your second don't go long. There is another penalty area behind the green. The cool thing about these holes is they were built during the course renovation in 2001 and separated from the rest of the course. It almost feels like you left the property when you first crossed the bridge and returning home when you drive back over the bridge to the seventh tee.

What is your course's claim to fame, or is there a little known fact that golfers should know about the property?
Most recently, The City of Delavan, which owns Delbrook, was left $1,668,000 by the estate of Pat Nelson in honor of her parents Earl and Charlotte Nelson. Earl and Charlotte were avid golfers at Delbrook many years ago. This unexpected gift is intended for improvements at Delbrook Golf Course. Although all courses have their own history this is our example of what a local community golf course can mean to the people who play and spend their time there.

What tournaments/events have you (recently) hosted or will be hosting?
We don't host any tournaments but we do host several charitable outings throughout the year. Included are the McGMO, on the last Friday in July, and the Jane Payne Charmer Classic on the last Monday in July. Both events take up all 27 holes with proceeds from the events going to charitable organizations.

Besides golf, what other amenities do you offer if a golfer wants to spend most of the day at your facility?
Delbrook has a practice range, practice putting and chipping greens, so you can make some time to practice some before you go out to play. I would suggest make a day of it. Greenie's Clubhouse serves breakfast lunch and dinner. Arrive early and have breakfast and stay for lunch after your round. Or do lunch and dinner. You won't regret it, Greenie's is one of the best restaurants in our area.

For the traveling golfer, do you have lodging onsite or partner with any area hotels?
We do not have lodging onsite but there are a number of hotels within 5 minutes of the course. There are also a number of Bed and Breakfast options in Delavan.

Signature sandwich or drink?
The smokehouse sandwich selection at Greenie's is outstanding. With Prime Rib, Smoked Brisket and Cuban Panini's leading the way.

Raizul tequila is apparently pretty popular at Delbrook since Greenie's has been one of the largest sellers of this tequila in Wisconsin.
