Old Overton Club Chooses Troon Prive'

Old Overton Club Chooses Troon Prive'

Birmingham, Alabama. Troon®, the leader in club management, development, and marketing, is pleased to announce it has been selected to manage Old Overton Club, a private club located in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, a suburb of Birmingham. Troon Privé, the private club operating division of Troon, will oversee golf, club, food & beverage operations as well golf course agronomy, and membership marketing.

Established in 1993, Old Overton Club features an 18-hole Jerry Pate and Tom Fazio-designed golf course considered by Golf Digest and Golfweek to be one of the top five golf courses in the state. The par-71, 7,200-yard course has been described as "being cut from the rocky terrain to transcend its surroundings."

"We are thrilled to have been selected to manage operations at Old Overton Club," said Matt Hurley, President, Honours Golf, a Birmingham-based division of Troon. "This Club has always been held in high regard, not only within the area but all over the country; receiving accolades as one of the best private courses in Alabama. Our goal will be to elevate the member and guest experience even further and enjoy this new partnership well into the future."

Old Overton Club's private 25,000 square-foot clubhouse includes both fine and casual dining options as well as event space for member gatherings. The Tennis Pavilion at Old Overton is home to seven Hydrocourts (soft) and two hard courts, offering members the finest playing surface. The club offers a robust competitive ladies' tennis program and a growing men's following, while its junior program is recognized as one of the best in Alabama.

The club's outdoor pool complex features a six-lane competition pool, with shallow areas for younger swimmers, a separate toddler pool, and locker room facilities. The pool grill and porch areas provide members with a relaxing place to enjoy meals and mingle.

"We are very pleased to have partnered with Troon for the daily operations of our club," said Board President Mike Tracy. "We are excited about the course renovations that have been done and look forward to future upgrades to the property. We know that Troon is the right choice to take us to the next level in the member experience."

The Country Club of Birmingham has hosted U.S. Mid-Amateurs, Shoal Creek Club has been the site for two PGA Championships, and Greystone's Founders Course is home to the Regions Tradition for the PGA Tour Champions, but Old Overton is the best of the bunch, hands down, in Jefferson County. It is a difficult track to get on-ultra private-but it is worth the effort and guest fee. This is some of Jerry Pate's best work with Fazio. The course just flows so naturally out of hills and valleys.

From the scintillating opening shot off of the elevated tee, comes one fantastic scenic hole after another. The par 3s are very strong with breathtaking downhill shots framing the outward ones.
Water comes into play on the inward offerings. The three par 5s are burly holes. The 4s are not repetitive and play both uphill and downhill, and have a good mix of both left-to-right and right-to-left. The convergence of the par 4, 11th, the par 3 17th, and par 4, 18th reminds me of Augusta National. It is a natural amphitheater that is open, save for a few clusters of loblolly pines. The creek that divides the 11th and 17th is absolutely beautiful. The short, drivable par 4, 15th is a real treasure. My overview of Old Overton is pure golf with major chops. It could play host to any event that comes to Birmingham.
