Charleston Golf - South Carolina

By Reid Nelson

The Charleston area is the gem of South Carolina golf, and was home to its first golf course back in 1786! Strategically located halfway between Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head, this beautiful seaport and resort city has been consistently ranked as a "Top Ten" North American travel destination by both Conde' Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines. The area's 19 championship courses are a big part of Charleston's charm. Charleston has played host to the 1991 Ryder Cup (the infamous "War by the Shore"), the 1997 and 2003 World Cup of Golf, the 2007 Senior PGA Championship and the LPGA's 2007 and 2008 Ginn Tribute hosted by ANNIKA. Charleston is very excited to be hosting the 2012 PGA Championship, which will be played on the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

Charleston Golf, Inc. and its on-line quote module make it easy for golfers to create and book an affordable custom golf vacation - at the price that's right for them. They also offer seasonal "Red Hot" package specials, which offer even greater value. Access to Charleston is no problem either, as Charleston International Airport is served by AirTran, Delta, USAirways, Continental, Northwest, American Eagle, and United Express.

Whether traveling with your golf buddies, with another couple, or the entire family, a Charleston golf vacation is tough to beat! With its beautiful resort beaches, award-winning restaurants and exciting shopping, this is one golf destination that will keep even a non-golfer happy!

Since 1988, he has owned and operated Reid Nelson Promotions, a marketing and public relations agency working exclusively with clients from within the golf industry. Prior to that, he served as the first public relations director for an emerging East Coast golf resort and, in that role, helped the property develop into one of the "top 100" golf destinations in the world, according to two major golf publications. While at the resort, he served as vice chairman and media chairman for the 1985 U.S. Senior Amateur.

Since launching his own firm, Nelson has worked with clients from across the United States, as well as in Europe and Central America. His PR efforts have helped nearly a dozen courses earn "top 100" status and more than 10 courses earn recognition in various "Best New" listings. When the PGA of America named Kiawah Island as site of the 1991 Ryder Cup Matches, he served on the tournament committee, working directly with the president of Kiawah Island Golf & Tennis, as well as the Executive Tournament Director.

In addition to his public relations business, he is a partner and Director of Operations for the Mid-Atlantic Golf Academy, a junior golf school located in the Shenandoah foothills just west of Washington, D.C. The Academy was founded by Fred Greenberg, a pioneer of the youth summer camp industry, and shares a campus with Greenberg's Timber Ridge Camp, which was founded in 1955, making it one of the oldest, most successful youth summer camps in the country.
