Tour Edge Drivers and Fairways

Up Your Game with Some High-Quality Gear

By David Theoret

Tour Edge may currently be one of the lesser known golf equipment companies out there, but players, including PGA Tour pros, have taken notice, especially with their fairways and hybrids. Especially on the Champions Tour where names such as Bart Bryant, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate and Dusty Waldorf all play some Tour Edge gear.

This year the hits keep coming with the new CBX line of fairways and the introduction of the HL3 line of equipment. While the CBX line is for better players, the HL3 line will definitely help higher handicappers. Here's a look at a couple of clubs.

CBX Fairway Wood

The Tour Edge CBX Fairway Wood could very well be the longest fairway wood you've ever put in your bag. Several years ago, when the company introduced the Exotics line of fairways, they set the bar high for competitors in terms of distance and power. With the 2018 lineup, they have raised that bar once again.

There are several new technologies in the CBX fairway line that work together to create this added distance. The catalyst of the CBX fairway wood is the combination of superior multi-materials and the construction process. Tour Edge uses a weldless process called combo-brazing to conjoin the Beta Titanium cup face to a hypersteel body. The CBX fairway has less spin thanks to their carbon sole weighting; less weight in the sole allowed the engineers to distribute it low and forward to create less spin and more distance. The Beta Titanium cup face is thinner and stronger than that of any competitive product and with variable face thickness, you'll find explosive power no matter where you hit the ball on the face. Lastly, a speed sole ramp on the bottom of the club minimizes interaction with the turf around the ball, helping to keep your club head speed up through impact. Independent testing has shown that the CBX fairway woods outdistance the competition by an average of more than 16 yards.

The Tour Edge Exotics CBX woods are designed for better players - low to mid handicappers who want enhanced ball speed and distance. With the new CBX fairways, you will find lower spin and more distance. Tour Edge has always been known for their innovative designs and the use of the best materials on the market; this is directly reflected in the price. Tour Edge has always been an industry leader when it comes to making great fairway woods and the CBX continues this tradition.

The CBX fairway woods are available in 13.5°, 15°, 16.5° and 18° lofts. Tour Edge has paired the CBX head with two of the best fairway shafts on the market: Project X HZRDUS and Mitsubishi Rayon Kuro Kage. Three shaft flexes are available: regular, stiff or extra stiff. Check the Tour Edge website for a list of available shafts. Lamkin Z5 is the stock grip. Retail price is $350.

Hot Launch HL3 Driver

When it comes to maximum game improvement irons, the new Tour Edge HL3 driver delivers everything a high handicapper could possibly want. The advanced technology and clubhead design do all the work; all you have to do is put a good swing on the ball and enjoy the extra distance off the tee!

The forged titanium head on the Hot Launch HL3 driver has Cup Face technology, which increases the amount of flex in the face, producing increased ball speed. A rear sole weight which moves the center of gravity back and deeper in the club head creates more launch and variable thicknesses on the face also help to increase ball speed on hits that don't quite find the center of the clubface.

Tour Edge's quest to increase ball speed does not end there. Positioned on the sole behind the club face is yet another technological breakthrough: The Power Channel, which has nothing to do with the Trinity Broadcasting Network! The power channel is designed to create even more ball speed while at the same time deliver less spin and added forgiveness on shots struck lower on the face.

There are two iterations of the HL3 driver, a regular model and an offset model. The offset version consistently corrects for fades and produces gentle draws; it will keep you from visiting the right side of the course so often. Golfers with slower swing speeds should see a good increase in carry off the tee. Tour Edge has developed a relationship with UST Mamiya, who has designed a proprietary graphite shaft exclusively for the Hot Launch HL3 line. The regular driver is available in either a 9° or 10.5° loft. The HL3 Offset driver is be available in 10.5°, 12° and 13.5° lofts. Only the 10.5° degree HL3 Offset is available in left-handed. Several shaft flexes are available: ladies, senior, regular and stiff, with weights varying between 48 and 60 grams. Retail price on the new HL3 driver is $190. As with all Tour Edge products, it features their Lifetime Warranty and a 30-day money back guarantee. The HL3 lineup is not limited to just drivers, in fact there is a complete set of equipment, including drivers, fairways, hybrids irons and wedges. David Theoret David Theoret has been in the golf and golf travel industry for over 10 years, primarily selling online advertising. For the past seven years, he has also been a golf writer, reviewing golf courses, resorts, destinations, equipment, golf apparel, and training aids - the latter of which never seems to help. David's articles and reviews have been posted on many golf travel and equipment websites.

Growing up in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, it was naturally assumed he would play hockey. Beginning at the age of 3 and continuing into his late 30's, he did just that. However, after one too many pucks to the head, he realized that golf was a lot easier on the body (whoever said hockey players were slow) and took the game up.

After moving to Florida and accepting a position with TravelGolf Media (now part of GolfNow) his love for the game grew exponentially. Most Saturdays you will find him on a course somewhere in Florida or on the practice range reinforcing his bad habits. David plays to a 10 handicap - unless there is money involved in which case it goes considerably higher. He currently resides in Lakeland, FL with his wife Belinda and their two "kids", Madyson and Molly.
