What You Need To Know: Majestic Oaks at Lake Lawn Resort

An Insightful Interview With Brandon M McConnell, Corporate Executive at Delavan Lake Lawn Management LLC

By Brian Weis

Whether you have played a course 20+ times a year or looking to play the course for the first time, insights from an insider can help enhance your golf experience. Below is an interview with Brandon M McConnell who shares some valuable tidbits about the course, memorable holes and must eats and treats at the 19th.

Give Our Readers An Overview of the Golf Course/Property
First opened in 1921, Lake Lawn's championship golf course is one of the Midwest's premier lakefront destinations. One of the most scenic courses set amid over 250 lush, tree-lined acres, and two miles of shoreline, the course was masterfully re-engineered in 1990 by renowned architect Dick Nugent. Best known for its stately oaks, multi-tiered greens, deep bunkers and subtle undulations; each hole is set with multiple tee boxes for players of all abilities. The Majestic Oaks Clubhouse and Clubhouse Bar & Grill is open daily with a Pro Shop that is stocked with the latest equipment, accessories, and apparel.

Majestic Oaks is located with the award-winning Lake Lawn Resort. This historic destination continues to serve as one of the Midwest's top resorts for families, couples and friends to make new memories, or to relive stories of old. Featuring three distinct pools, four dining outlets, a full menu of recreational offerings including a marina, watersports and an active airstrip, expansive gift shop and conference space focused on social collaboration, you may never want to leave!

If Someone Was Looking To Golf In The Area, Why Should They Play Your Course?
The Lake Geneva Golf Trail is full of some amazing golf courses that will provide long lasting memories. With championship level courses designed by some of the top golfers in the world, all the way to wide open, fun courses designed for group outings and entry level golfers, we are lucky to be a part of the golf scene here in Southern Wisconsin.

Majestic Oaks at Lake Lawn Resort is the perfect approachable hybrid experience for golfers of all ages and abilities. We host league nights for those looking to let out a little bit of the competitive spirit and family nights each week where the entire family can come out, play nine holes with cart and get food all for under $20 per person.

Due to its overall shorter length of 6340 from the tips, 5931 from the whites and 5128 from the forward tee box, the course can be played at a quicker pace leaving plenty of time during the day to experience everything our area has to offer.

What Tips or Local Knowledge Would You Provide To Help Them Score Better At Your Course?
The course itself has been around for a long time yet continues to seem to evolve each season. Some of the older oak trees that were here from years ago have either been removed due to age, disease, or even from storm damage over the course of time. This has opened up certain areas along the fairways that may have played tighter in years past. Yet, for every tree that has been lost, new trees have been planted in new locations once again altering the angle of approach shots for those who have played the course throughout the years.

The best tip I can provide is to have fun with your round. There are certainly places that you can tee it up and launch it, there are holes that you will have to play a shot or two ahead in your mind to ensure you give yourself a shot at a low number on the scorecard, but most of all, many of our greens are larger with a ton of movement. Get it up there and enjoy the challenges with the flat stick!

Any recent changes to the golf course? Or any upcoming changes?
We have flipped a number of holes to offer a unique experience by ensuring the outer perimeter holes are featured on the front nine, showcasing the lake, while the back nine features the inner set of holes challenging our golfers with a more tree lined experience. Being at Lake Lawn Resort, this also incorporates both of the key elements of the resort's grounds into our course layout as well.

Recent Awards or What You Are Most Proud About The Course?
The team at Majestic Oaks continues to be recognized for their service levels and the course's approachability. These accolades have even included being awarded The Best of Walworth County's - Best Course. While there is much to be proud of, we are most thankful that this course has truly turned into a way to give back to the community in which we call home. Serving as the host of numerous benefit and charity events, not to mention those family nights we just mentioned, we are blessed to welcome not only resort guests and members, but our local neighbors as well to enjoy memorable days with family and friends enjoying the best game in the world.

What Is The Signature, Most Talked About, or Most Photographed Hole?
Hole # 3 is a perfect blend of what the course is all about. It incorporates nature and specifically the lakefront into the players experience. With this picturesque long par five sitting just a few feet above the lake, the hole provides an opportunity for golfers of all abilities to grip it and rip it off the tee box which always brings a smile to everyone's face! Selfies, live feeds on social media and group photos are often found along the fairway and green of this hole.

What Is Your Favorite Hole? Any Tips to Play It?
Speaking of #3, it is part of a trio of back-to-back-to-back holes that often swing a player's overall round based on how they survive through them. We previously discussed the picturesque lakeside par 5, however that hole is bookended by two par threes on #2 and #4.

Hole #2 has an elevated tee box from just 165 yards away down to a large, tiered green that slopes from back to front and even a little left to right slope. Depending on the pin placement, this will test a player's ball control as that slope comes into play to ensure a birdie putt opportunity.

On the opposing bookend, hole #4 is also a challenging par three coming in at 212 yards. While a straight tee shot is always your best friend on any hole, #4 green itself is protected within a valley surrounded by bunkers requiring a low, accurate approach off the tee to ensure the high lakeside breeze does not alter your line.

Overall, these three are a fun set of holes that require different aspects of a golfer's game on each hole.

Must Have Dish or Drink after the round at the 19th Hole?
While the Clubhouse Bar & Grill have several options from ice cold drinks from the bar to a full menu with something for everyone in the group to enjoy, we take the time each and every day to setup our large trusty Trager and cook an array of amazing smoked meats that get turned into everything from pulled pork sandwiches, BBQ ribs and even brisket platters.

While you can always go with the staple brat or fresh off the grill juicy cheeseburger, there is nothing quite like that pulled pork sandwich that you can smell cooking from a couple holes away!

For the traveling golfer, do you have lodging onsite or partner with any area hotels?
Majestic Oaks is lucky enough to be located within the grounds of the award-winning Lake Lawn Resort. This diamond rated resort offers a number of great overnight packages featuring discounted room rates, entry into the amazing spa and of course an opportunity to dine at one of their four dining outlets including the signature 1878 on the Lake. With several of the unique and spacious rooms offering lake views, not to mention direct transportation from your room to the pro shop if requested, the resort team really helps round out a tremendous overall experience for any golf trip.
