Golf Course Overview: Tanglewood Golf Course

Local and traveling golfers love to research course before playing, whether it is to gain some local knowledge or to set the expectation for their experience. Below is an interview with Matt Puckett who shares some valuable insight about the property, its most talked about holes and the signature dish/drink to consume at the 19th hole.

How Does Your Course Differ From The Others In The Area?
Tanglewood differs from other courses in the area due to the hills throughout the course. The course provides the opportunity to hit a variety of shots from different lies such as side hill, downhill, and uphill. Tanglewood also has some blind shots that keeps things interesting for any skill level player.

For someone who has not played the course in awhile, has there been any new changes/renovations to the course or property?
We have been under new management since February 2014. Since then we have put a lot of work into the course. Our greens are healthier than ever, as well as full and plush fairways. We have also taken out some bunkers on the course and turned them into grass bunkers. The course is night and day compared to what it was even two years ago. We are making positive strides every day to keep improving.

What is your course's answer to Amen Corner? (Describe your best/hardest 3 back/back/back holes)
In my opinion, the toughest back to back to back holes would be holes 11, 12, and 13. Number 11 is our number one handicap hole. It generally plays into the wind, and if you don't carry it to the top of the hill in the fairway, you'll be stuck with a blind second shot into the green that is protected by a pond in the front. For short hitters, it would be best to lay up short of the water and try to make par the old fashioned way by getting up and down. For longer hitters that can reach the top of the hill, a well struck iron shot is required to hit the green. Par on our 11th hole is a great score.

Once you make your par on 11, you'll be headed to our 12th hole. Number 12 is a longer par 3 that can play anywhere from 180 yards all the way up to 220. On top of the distance of the shot, this hole plays a bit up hill. Most people leave their shot short and it winds up in the valley in front of the green. The green itself slopes back to front, leaving you a tough putt for any putt behind the hole. For me, this is one of the toughest holes to play. Once again, making par on this hole is something to be happy with.

Lastly, we come to hole 13. This hole has a fairway that slopes hard left to right, which requires you to aim down the left hand tree line in order for your ball to kick down into the fairway. From there, you're left with a shot below your feet for right handed players or above your feet for left handed players. Just like the tee shot, you'll need to aim left towards the tall tree left of the green on your second shot in order for your ball to kick down from the left side towards the green. A birdie can be made on this hole with well placed shots.

What is your course's claim to fame, or is there a little known fact that golfers should know about the property?
Our Stay N' Play packages are excellent. We've had groups that have been coming to Tanglewood for our golf packages for 20 years. It really has become our niche and specialty, and under new ownership it has only become better. What tournaments/events have you (recently) hosted or will be hosting?
Tanglewood offers a variety of events such as member tournaments (most of which are open to the public), golf scrambles, and an event we started last year called our Friday Night Scramble. This event in particular draws a big crowd every week and we usually have a live band that plays afterwards. It is a best ball scramble for 9 holes, and teams consists of 6 players, and we tee off between 5:30 and 6 pm. We plan on starting this around the second or third week of May. Besides golf, what other amenities do you offer if a golfer wants to spend most of the day at your facility?
Currently we only offer golf, but we are constantly thinking of ideas that we could do to offer more at Tanglewood and hope to add some new things in the future. We do have a full bar to grant any of your mixed drink wishes.

Signature sandwich or drink?
My personal favorite is our chicken finger basket with fries or our cheeseburger with fries. Both are an excellent choice when it comes to getting food at the turn or after your round.
