Established in the early 1930s, the Mayville Golf Course ranks up there as one of the oldest, most challenging public golf courses Wisconsin has to offer! With an 18-hole golf course full of rolling hills and slopes, our greens have built a reputation as "true and smooth," and some of the best you can putt on. Conveniently located in Dodge County along the Rock River among the beautiful rolling hills of the countryside, and with excellent views, amenities and a professional staff, the Mayville Golf Course is a one-stop shop for everyone.
If Someone Was Looking To Golf In The Area, Why Should They Play Your Course?
At The Mayville Golf Course, we offer excellent customer service from our golf to bar restaurant. This hidden gem will challenge you as a golfer as well as reward you for proper placements on your approach shots into the greens. When you get to hole 14 you are done playing par 4's, the unique par 3-5-3-3-5 finish will test your skill with our small undulated greens. After your golf round come inside and visit our newly renovated bar and restaurant for one of our 40+ different beers and a panini, special blend burger, or steak fresh cut daily at Leroy Meats.
What Tips or Local Knowledge Would You Provide To Help Them Score Better At Your Course?
Proper placement off the tee is very important with how small the greens are. Most greens at The Mayville Golf Course are small and elevated with a lot of undulation. It is important to know where the pin is on the green before hitting your tee shot. When you are hitting approach shots into the greens if you miss the green you are going to want to miss in the front of the greens. If you get off the greens to the left or right, it may be difficult to go up and down.
Any recent changes to the golf course? Or any upcoming changes?
The course was purchased from the city of Mayville in 2020 by Leroy Meats. The purchase came with no golf carts, limited golf course equipment, no kitchen, out of date flooring and wallcoverings, just to name a few things. The large investment was put into the restaurant by knocking down some walls, redoing the bar layout, building a restaurant kitchen, installing a 16 tap system in the bar, and putting in a beautiful stone fireplace were some necessary steps to having an onsite restaurant called The Meating Place. The purchase of multiple pieces of greens and ground equipment, a full fleet of new carts with GPS, and removal of over 100 dead trees, improved the quality of the golf course second to none. Some renovations of bunkers, new chemical application schedule to kill weeds and dandelions, proper maintenance, and replanting of new trees helped the course to make it one the best golf courses in Dodge County.
Recent Awards or What You Are Most Proud About The Course?
We are very proud of some of the changes that were made at The Mayville Golf Course and The Meating Place Restaurant since 2020. Our team will be looking into entering in the GCOW awards and get more involved with the WSGA in the future. As far as the golf course itself we are very happy with the conditions and playability that we improved on. The proper maintenance and equipment purchased helped get the Mayville Golf Course looking beautiful again like it did in the late 90s.
What Is The Signature, Most Talked About, or Most Photographed Hole?
The Signature hole at The Mayville Golf is the par 3 hole 4. This is a downhill par 3 surrounded by water with a boulder lined creek running through the fairway before the green. It is a picturesque hole with a yardage of 128 from the back tees and plays about 10 yards shorter than the distance.
What Is Your Favorite Hole? Any Tips to Play It?
My favorite hole is the par 4 hole 11 because I feel like it is the hardest hole to par on the golf course. Playing at 413 yards from the back tees, you need to hit a tee shot in the fairway to have a look at the green on your second shot. The tree short left of the green that hangs partly in the fairway makes for a hit and hope on some approach shots to the green. The treacherous greenside bunker to the right of the green could cause some bogeys or doubles if you end up in it as well as the two-tiered green makes for some interesting putts. The best play off the tee is the right side of the fairway next to the two mounds. On your second shot landing your ball short and rolling it up on the green is the proper play to prevent hitting the tree short left of the green. Make the putt and you will be in for a birdie.
Must Have Dish or Drink after the round at the 19th Hole?
The 19th hole at The Mayville Golf Course is called The Meating Place. If beer is on you mind at the after your round then you must select one of our 16 tap beers that are rotated daily. Our signature drink would be our hand muddled old fashions. We offer an old fashion menu with over 8 different old fashioned with the best seller being the Brown Sugar Bourbon Old Fashioned. As far as The Meating Place Restaurant located in The Mayville Golf Course, you must have the Smokehouse BBQ Brisket Panini if you are eating before 4pm. At 4pm we start server our entrees and our fresh hand cut Ribeye's with the garlic butter are to die for. Make sure to start out with our famous Pork Belly Bites and Hand Breaded Mushrooms for an appetizer.
For the traveling golfer, do you have lodging onsite or partner with any area hotels?
There are multiple Airbnb's located in Mayville as well as two hotels. The Mayville Inn is a colonial style hotel located on the west side of Mayville and The Audubon Hotel Established in 1896, is an iconic staple piece settled in downtown Mayville.
Who Holds Course Record and What Was Their Score?
Stu Strook currently holds the course record with a 64 . Stu has been the golf coach at Mayville High School for almost 30 years and also runs our 8-week youth golf program in the summer. A 29 was recorded on the original 9 by Vern Schellpfeffer in 1952.
