Fort Myers - Sanibel Island Golf Guide

Fort Myers - Sanibel Island Fort Myers on the Gulf Coast, about a half hour north of Naples, roughly takes in Estero at the southern end up to Punta Gorda at the north. It has more than 40 courses, the Southwest Florida International Airport and a well-established business area. Public and municipal courses are quite affordable at less than $50 for green fees and cart.

For example Eastwood Golf Course designed by Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge, is priced around $40 while a must play for traditionalists and a real gem is Fort Myers Country Club. "The Fort", a classic 1917 Donald Ross, an easy walking course. On the newer end there is Magnolia Landing in North Fort. Designed by Gordon Lewis and opening in 2007, it is quite playable at this time, but promises to get better as it matures. Greens are big and moderately fast while vegetation evokes a wide, sweeping links feeling with winding coquina paths and large white sand bunkers. There is also Stoneybrook Golf Club in Estero playing a hefty 7,353 yards.

One of the major north south routes, the Tamiami Trail (Rt. 41), is lined by imposing gates leading to expensive golf communities. Although courses in these developments are typically private, due to the current economic conditions, there may be times when tee times open up to non-members. Just ask.

Some like Heritage Palms Golf & Country Club with two well rated courses are open for public play except for months of January through March but WCI Communities' Pelican Preserve Golf Club, allows some public play on its 18-hole Heron course designed by Chip Powell while Eagle Ridge Golf Club characterized by lakes, pines, and cypress with water on 17 holes, offers attractive seasonal memberships.

Fort Myers is the gateway to the upscale barrier islands, Sanibel and Captiva to the west. Good public tracks include The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club, a short course playing 5,578 yards around a watery landscape with a wildlife sanctuary on the back nine and Beachview Golf Club wrapped around the Sanibel River.
