Coastal NC - Wilmington Golf Guide
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with its 100 golf courses, seemingly endless white-sand beaches, bunches of excellent restaurants and countless family attractions hosts millions of golfers a year, for good reason. Yet not far north of Myrtle's famous Grand Strand lies a golf region that has gone all but unnoticed on the national golf stage, Coastal North Carolina, sometimes called Calabash.
By egregiously overlooking this stunningly golf-rich region, the golf media has done astute traveling golfers a great service, since they can play courses designed by Rees Jones, Tom Jackson, Dan Maples, William Byrd, and plenty of other quality designers, without having to navigate through the hassles that playing Myrtle Beach sometimes requires.
The four finishing holes of the Pearl's West Course dance high on a bluff that overlooks the Calabash River and the coastal marshland. Golfers who play this course will understand why it has earned the accolades and hosted the tournaments that it has.
Opened in 1989, Sea Trail Plantation & Golf Resort, located in Sunset Beach, is a memorable resort course designed by Rees Jones, known as the Open Doctor because he has redesigned many courses on which the U.S. Open Championship has been played.
Only golfers who like their golf challenging should seek out Meadowlands Golf Club, since it is long and plays to a 136 slope. But this is by no means a criticism. Golfers who like to play more than 18 holes will want to visit the semi-private Brunswick Plantation, which features 27 holes.
