Golf Course Information
Description
Bald Mountain in Lake Orion just NE of the Palace of Auburn Hills is one of the metro area's most traditional layouts, designed in 1929 by Wilfred Reid. The course features mostly open fairways lined by mature trees, with sufficient landing areas. There are few sand traps but gentle swales and grass bunkers often can be found greenside. Golfers should be able to locate level landing zones, along fairways that are very rolling, with elevation changes including a mix of raised tees and green complexes. Players should not expect manicured bent tees, fairways and bunkers that are prevalent on some of metro areas upscale layouts - but with green fees topping out at $40 including cart - this is a fine value for the overall quality. Land on the greens - and you will be delighted with the wonderfully conditioned putting surfaces that provide good opportunities for par or better.
A great feature at this property is the nine hole executive layout. This course presents the same quality of putting surfaces, though they are nearly void of the undulations and double tiers often found on the championship design. This is a perfect place for beginners to hone their game, and also is a relaxing and quick round for those without the time to play 18. The length of holes ranges from 105 to 252 yards. Also on property is a grass range and a large practice green. The clubhouse features a small pro shop, locker rooms with showers, and a restaurant/lounge that is open for lunch daily, and breakfast on weekends. Groups of up to 80 or more can be comfortably accommodated in outings and special events.
Bald Mountain is a good walking course. The executive layout is priced at $8 weekdays and $11 weekends, and there is a considerable discount for walkers on the championship course. Tee areas are usually located close to the previous green, and the rolling landscape provides a mild workout and a good walk - not spoiled. Three sets of tees measure 6624 yards with a 120 slope, 6206 yards with a 115 slope, and forward tees at 5490 yards with a slope of 120. There are 100, 150 and 200 yardage markers on both sides of the fairways, and some sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green. Lots of trees but plenty of room in-between, large undulating putting surfaces, and some pretty and interesting par threes...Bald Mountain is definitely a nice course for the money. Bring a pull cart and walk.
