Martin, a past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, studied the great Irish and Scottish links before drawing this one up, and it shows in the routing. Eighteen holes, par 71, 6,806 yards from the tips, no water in play anywhere on the property (the adjacent Janesville airport has rules about attracting waterfowl, which turned into a design constraint Martin used to his advantage). The closing par 5 is the hole you will replay on the drive home, a risk-reward finisher to a well-guarded double-tiered green where a birdie is there for the taking if you commit to the right line.
