Description
Municipal Golf officially started in the City of Dayton in 1918 when John H. Patterson gave to the City of Dayton a gift of 340 acres of land.
In 1919, a nine hole golf course was constructed, along with several picnic cabin facilities. This was the first municipally operated golf course in Dayton. The response was so great that the following year nine more holes were formally dedicated and opened as Community Golf Course.
In 1924, the USGA Amateur Public Links Tournament was held here.
By 1926, researchers in soil and turf management recommended that "bent grass" be used for greens. Community adopted the idea in 1926, planting six greens in "bent grass". In 1954, the new clubhouse was dedicated and at that time, the course was renamed "Dayton Community Golf Course".
In 1982, the City of Dayton completed the major project of reconstructing all of the existing sand bunkers and changing over to white sand. In 1983, the City of Dayton installed its first automatic irrigation system. This capital investment provided Community Golf Course with watered fairways, tees and greens. Community Golf Course is considered one of the finest public courses in the country.
