Description
In 1929 three men of Moose Lake had the vision of a golf course for their community. The three were a banker, an attorney, and a dentist. The banker was Richard Lewis, the attorney was Clayton Dodge, and the dentist was Elmer J. Williams. By enlisting additional community support they were able to purchase the Romanoski farm on the south shore of Sand Lake. In designing the course the local leaders solicited the aid of a sports writer, Runcie Martin, of Duluth. He engaged the help of the greenkeeper of Nemadji Golf Course in Superior. That's where it all began.
By 1950 according to the local paper..."there were approximately 37 stock holding members and about 20 season ticket holders. A share of stock cast $50 plus a $10 federal tax. Dues for the stock holders were $10 per year while season tickets were $15 or $20 for man and wife." During this time it was know that greens fees were 0.50 cents per round or $1 for all day.
