Golf Course Information
Description
When planning the Naples National golf course layout, the club's founders selected Hurdzan and Fry golf course architects because they had the talent and skill to turn it's 175 acre flat piece of Florida into a masterpiece. Their philosophy when designing the Naples National golf course was to design a course with a more relaxed spirit in keeping with the tradition of golf's golden age, to create beautiful settings with unforgettable images.
During the design of the golf course, Hurdzan and Frey believed in the tradition of making the most of the native terrain; in this case, 320 acres of centuries-old stands of cypress and pine, marshland and sand. The end result is that golfers will find a golf course that appears unbelievably mature, yet natural at the same time. One hundred and twenty acres of land have been dedicated as a nature preserve and will remain undisturbed.
Those privileged enough to have played August National and Pine Valley will immediately pick up on striking and often harrowing similarities. Rugged sand scrub waste areas border meticulously manicured fairways. The overall design is a throwback to the historic courses of 60, 70, 80 years ago. No island greens. No railroad ties. No gimmicks. Still and all, from the tips, this par 72 tops out at well over 7,000 yards ~ giving even low handicappers a high degree of difficulty and reward.
The golf course is of the highest quality, with state-of-the-art engineering and irrigation.
The routing is traditional, with the following features:
" The holes are presented in such a way that signals how to play them from the tee.
" Elevations of tees and greens are varied, yet never severe.
" Fairways contain strategic mounds with changes of elevation and slope.
" Fairways vary in width, with the longer holes having wider landing areas.
" Approach shots allow for a running shot in many cases.
" Trees guard the entrance to several greens.
" Sand bunkering is strategic, with relatively few bunkers.
" Lakes are positioned for both playing and aesthetic purposes.
" An Old Settler's property boundary stone wall winds through the golf course, adding a sense of maturity and distinction to the routing.
" Native sand scrub areas, reminiscent of those found at Pine Valley, are featured throughout the course.
" Long approach shots are to comparatively large greens with somewhat less contour.
" Short approach shots are to comparatively small greens with relatively greater contour.
" Five sets of tees provide fair challenges for high handicappers and professionals alike.
" Tees approach the quality and consistency of the greens.
" Greens use contour, and to lesser degree grain, to create extra speed. Flat cross-grain speeds average between 10 and 11 on the stimpmeter.
" The entire course, from tee to green, and from tree-line to tree-line, is immaculately maintained at all times to a level found only at the finest clubs in the world.
