Golf Course Review: Muirfield
Amazing Experience
Muirfield is a private club but offers limited public play on select days. Reach out to the email on their website to inquiry for a tee time.
If you are lucky enough to secure a tee time opt to stay for lunch. It is an elegant buffet style meal. Jacket/tie/dress shoes are mandatory. Showers are available for after your round.
Muirfield, located in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland, is the home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the world's oldest golf club, dating back to 1744. Originally based at Leith Links and later at Musselburgh, the club moved to Muirfield in 1891, where the new course was designed by Old Tom Morris.
What sets Muirfield apart is its unique course layout. Unlike traditional links courses that follow a straight out-and-back routing, Muirfield's layout is a clever loop-within-a-loop—two concentric rings of nine holes running clockwise and counterclockwise. This provides a constantly changing wind direction, keeping golfers guessing (and often grumbling).
Muirfield is a blue-blood in the Open Championship rota. It has hosted The Open Championship 16 times (most recently in 2013, won by Phil Mickelson). It’s also hosted:
* The Amateur Championship (multiple times)
* Ryder Cup (1973)
* Curtis Cup (1952)
* Walker Cup (1971)
* Women’s British Open (for the first time in 2022, won by Ashleigh Buhai)
My favorite hole was 17. A long par 5 that has some hellish bunkers and a well protected green with pot bunkers on each side.
