Golf Course Information
Description
With the completion of the 2012 Web.com Mylan Classic, I thought it would be interesting to include a few factoids and guidelines achieved for the week of the tournament. Listed below are heights of cut for all playing surfaces.
Actually, the green speeds consistently stimped between 11.8 inches and 12.1 inches Tuesday through Sunday. Vigilant monitoring of speeds throughout the day, as well as the weather, dictated frequencies of mowing in the morning and evening to achieve these objectives. The second round, Friday, was by far the most challenging for the grounds staff. Temperatures peaking at 93 degrees with 18 - 20 mph sustained wind and full sunshine, coupled with a triple mowing of the greens that morning raised the anxiety of all involved. Frequent hydrating of the crowns (the growing point) of the plant through precision hand watering, maintained consistent playing conditions throughout the day without compromising green speeds or green surface firmness. Had we not accomplished this task, I conservatively estimate that there would have been a minimum of 40% green surface turf loss. Jim Duncan, PGA Web.com Tour Director provided communication to the players as to the situation, allowing enough time for staff members and myself to implement the hand watering and not compromise playing conditions for members and their guests upon completion of the tournament. He is to be commended as this was not a popular decision and difficult to communicate to players.
All volunteers that contributed to the Grounds Department have my sincerest gratitude. Many Assistant Golf Course Superintendents, Interns, and Commercial Representatives, arrived at our staging area at 3:45am each morning. All checked their egos at the entrance of the club and performed any task asked of them willingly and unabashed. The staff through training and discipline also performed admirably with efficiency, effectiveness and safety. Of course, none of this would occur without leadership and direction. With cooperation and dedication the Assistant Superintendents and Equipment Mangers worked countless 18 hour days and of whom I am most proud and more importantly, respect.
