Golf Course Information
Description
Spring Lake was founded in 1916 by six men - Henry J. Rupp; J.G. Stuart; S.M. Potter; H.J. Eaton; Addison Calkins; and Henry Germann. In 1917, a charter was drawn up and the membership was increased to twelve. This land, consisting of 150 acres, was purchased from Mr. Homan, for whom the existing falls was named for, and Mr. Arthur Bowles. This site is locating on the picturesque bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River about three miles north of Quincy.
The club was organized in the Illinois State Bank Building and Mr. H.O. Simons, landscape architect (who also laid out the Quincy Park System) made the recommendation for the location of the lake and the clubhouse. More than 15 acres of the valley were converted into a beautiful lake supplied with clear water from an everlasting spring. This spring, which is fed by Lake Superior, flows from 700,000 to 1,000,000 gallons of water a day, and was known as Leonard Springs. In 1920, the lake was divided by a dam and the present swimming pool was built.
In the early 1920s, a spacious clubhouse with large screened porches on either side and equipped with all modern conveniences, including hot and cold water shower baths, provided ample facilities for the social life of the club. The Delco System was first used to light the clubhouse. Later the club financed poles and lines to hook up with the C.I.P.S. Electric Company.
