Description

Valencia Country Clubs course has been fortunate to have been graced by some of the best professionals in modern day golf. The PGA Tours historic Los Angeles Open, an event now known as the Northern Trust Open has been a fixture at Riviera Country Club since 1973. In 1998, the tournament, known as the Nissan Open, could not be held at Riviera because of Rivieras commitment to host the U.S. Senior Open that year. After hosting several USGA Sectional Qualifying tournaments, Valencia Country Club was prepared to handle the event.

The 1998 Nissan Open field featured some of golfs well-known professionals, including Fred Couples, John Daly, Nick Faldo, Justin Leonard, Tom Lehman, Tom Kite, Phil Mickelson, Corey Pavin, Craig Stadler, Duffy Waldorf, Payne Stewart, and its marquee competitor, Tiger Woods. Fans were treated to a Tiger-esque performance on the Sunday back nine, as Woods birdied three out of the final four holes.
